Tricks of the Trade

Please read the following tips and tricks that years of experience have taught us will make your event run smoothly and ensure the cake of your dreams is the life and soul of the party!

Temperature Control

Most cakes are very sensitive to extreme temperatures, given our ever changing weather here in the UK it is important to consider the type of cake you would like and also where is will be stored and displayed.

If your cake is for an event that is in the peak of summer or in a very warm venue such as a marquee we would recommend a cake covered in fondant as opposed to a semi-naked cake or a buttercream cake. Where possible the cake should be stored in a cool room until as close to the cake cutting as possible to avoid and structural and physical disfiguration. Fondant cakes should never be stored in a refrigerator as the change in temperature can cause the fondant to 'sweat'.

If you are collecting a cake from us please make use of the air con if you are lucky enough to have it and keep the time in the car as short as possible.

Free From

Unfortunately as we are a small home bakery we cannot ensure that any of our cakes are '100% free from'. We work tirelessly to ensure that cross contamination does not take place however if any guests are at risk of a reaction resulting from allergies or intolerances we would recommend using a different company to create your design.

Transportation

If you are collecting a cake from us it is best to transport the cake on a flat surface within your vehicle with nothing that could move around the cake. We will provide some non-slip material to help your cake stay put and of course safe and steady driving is highly recommended. If possible having someone to accompany you for collection makes the process of transporting the cake, opening doors etc a lot easier. Once the cake has left our premises we are no longer responsible for any damage that can occur during transportation. if in any doubt add the delivery option when booking.

Non Edible Decorations

When we discuss your cake design you may wish to use flowers from your wedding day on the cake to create a co-ordinated theme. This is not a problem and we can easily liase with your florist to ensure we have enough material to work with. Please note not all flowers are suitable to use on an edible item and we will cross check this with your florist.

Another option to reduce the amount of time spent on your cake (and hence reduce cost) is to use non-edible figurines and decorations on your cake. This is often a popular choice for people who wish to keep the decorations as a momento after the event.

Many people opt to use dummy (polystyrene) tiers for wedding cake in particular. This is an effective way of creating a cake that has volume enough to impress whilst reducing the weight of the cake and offering more structural integrity. Contrary to popular belief dummy tiers do not significantly reduce the overall cost of the cake as the same amount of time is required to decorate them to look as amazing as the rest of the cake. The use of polystyrene also has environmental considerations as it does not bio-degrade. We will discuss the use of dummy tiers with you during our consultation, as non-edible items these cannot be cut through for those lovely 'cutting the cake' pictures so the placement of these tiers has to be carefully considered.
